Interview :: DILLON PERILLO

Although Dillon lives in North Malibu, his regular jaunts to Ventura County have earned him a top spot in the regions pecking order along with his VC surf peers Nick Rozsa and Noah Erickson. And last years NSSA Open Juniors National Title just adds to this kids heaping stack of trophies that highlight his competitive success. His busy schedule of contests and surf trips make him hard to fi nd, but luckily for us, he had a few seconds to break it down before he fl ew off to Indo for a month this summer.

How old are you? I am 17 years old

Where you were born, where do you live now? I was born at the Thousand Oaks hospital and I live in Malibu at the moment.

List all the rad companies that support you. Hurley, Smith, DC, Dakine, Roberts Surfboards, SexWax, Ladera, and Nalus

Describe an average surf day at home. Wake up early, drink some coff ee, then go surf XXXX or XXXXXXXXX in the morning, then either surf XXXXXX, or I’ll go to XXXX with Noah Erickson.

Who do you usually surf with? Either all my friends in Malibu (Leo Harrington, Sean Merrick, Sam McGee, Daniel Kraft, Beau Bigalow, Ladera fool), Noah, or my Dad.

Who are the people that have helped you with your surfing career? My parents 100%!

Which surfers are your toughest opponents? The kids from Hawaii are really good like Granger, Alex, or Kai.

Who are the surfers (past and present) who infl uence you the most? First it was my dad who got me started. Since then I’ve always looked up to Dane Reynolds and Parko cuz they’re gnar.

Who are the local surfers you look up to around your home breaks? Dane Reynolds, Anthony Petrusso and Nick Rozsa.

Besides all the victories, what do you get out of competing? Discipline, drive, and anger.

What are your plans for the summer? Just have fun surfi ng with friends, and I’m going to Indo.

Where have you surfed in the world so far? Indo, Hawaii, OZ, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Puerto Rico, and Fiji.

Where would you like to go next? Either France or Tahiti. As far as the West Coast goes, I want to go down to Baja again, like Natividad.

Do you like road trips, or would you prefer to fly there and stay in one zone? I like to fly ‘cuz I can go farther away from home where the surf is usually way better and life is different.

What is it like visiting other places and cultures and then returning back to the familiarity of a So Cal lifestyle? It really gives you a whole new perspective on things and makes you not take for granted what is important in life.

Look into your crystal ball. What type of surfer do you see yourself as in the future, - Where have you surfed in the world so far? a photo/travel guy, a ‘QS and ‘CT competition warrior, or a mix of the two? I want to be a mix of everything like Andy or Parko.

Out of the water, what is important to you in life? What makes you happy? The things that me happy out of the water are my family and friends. I also like to skateboard, but I suck at it!

Are you into any other type of training, other boardsports, or hobbies? Just skating I guess, and a lot of sit ups.

Is there any particular trick or turn that you are stoked on right now? Or is there one that you are trying to pull? Yeah, I want to do all the new school stuff like Josh Kerr and Jamie-O are doing, but I haven’t pulled anything yet.

Well, try to pull some in Indo, and have a fun trip! I will. Thanks Ryan. Peace!
