Every cold water surfers’ dream becomes a reality as Rip Curl introduces the first power heated wetsuit.
Set for release at the end of this summer, the new H-Bomb is designed to keep you incredibly warm in frigid situations by offering infrared heat generated by two coated fiber elements positioned throughout the upper back of the wetsuit.
The elements are powered by two, rechargeable Polymer Lithium Ion batteries. As the elements conduct electricity, they generate heat. This warms your core, which in turn pumps warm blood to the rest of your body. The elements contain no metal, so there are no worries of corrosion or electromagnetic fi elds. The batteries are the same found in your cell phone, ipod, or laptop. All of the connections between the batteries and the elements are made of plastic, and contain rubber waterproof gaskets to ensure a solid seal in the water. Each battery weighs a mere four ounces and are positioned on each side of the lower back where they are cushioned by a comfortable layer of neoprene sponge. A home charger is included, while car chargers and extra sets of batteries will be sold separately. A small control switch allows for a low and high setting, or you can turn it off completely.
Put through the ringer by team riders from around the globe, the H-Bomb has undergone some rigorous testing in Arctic conditions. During the testing program, the air temperature averaged between 14 and 23 degrees, with wind chills reaching an icy -4 degrees. The water temps were measured as low as 30 degrees during the sessions! The pros were amazed with the 4/3 version and reported full-on warmth and fl exibility, even on the low setting. The H-Bomb will continue its thorough testing program right up until its release date.
Offered in 4/3, 3/2, and 2 mm thicknesses, the retail prices will range from $600 - $800. Imagine dropping back to a 2mm fullsuit for more flexibility without sacrificing the warmth!
